8 Restaurants and Eateries in Budapest [Part 2]

Even though Budapest might not be the first destination that comes to mind when thinking about food, it will disappoint the hungry foodie tourist. I visited Budapest for 5 days, ate and drank a lot, and now I’m here to help you experience the best Budapest has to offer.

The first post in the series covered 8 great coffee and pastry destinations in Budapest.

In the second of three posts I’ll be taking you on a savory journey through the streets of Budapest. From cheap street food to Michelin starred restaurants, I’ve got everything your heart (and stomach) desires, including some places to stay clear of.

Upscale Korean | Jungsik, Seoul

Om Nom Nomad - Jungsik

Jungsik is one of our most memorable dining experiences in Seoul. It blends traditional Korean flavors with modern techniques to create highly accessible dishes.

The restaurant’s New York sister has held two Michelin stars for quite some time now and this year Seoul Jungsik received its acclaimed 1 Michelin star award in the first edition of the South Korean capital.

Three Stars and a View | Lung King Heen , Hong Kong

Om Nom Nomad - Lung King Heen

Lung King Heen, led by chef Chan Yan Tak, owns many accolades – it is the first Chinese restaurant in the world to receive three Michelin stars; ranked #17 on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant 2017; and received 5 stars from The Fobes. Naturally – our expectations were set very high. I booked a table for lunch and got all excited for my first three starred Michelin restaurant experience.

Palette Adventure | Kadeau, Copenhagen

Om Nom Nomad - Kadeau

Kadeau wasn’t in our original planning. We actually had a reservation to AOC, which also holds two Michelin stars. I got such a warm recommendation from one of my fellow foodie instagram friends that I decided to cancel and book at Kadeau (why not both? I can only fit one two Michelin starred restaurant in a trip full of other Michelin starred restaurants without my husband wanting to kill me).

From Bangkok to Copenhagen | Kiin Kiin, Copenhagen

Om Nom Nomad - Kiin Kiin

Why would someone prefer to eat Thai food in Denmark? That’s a really good question—one that also crossed my mind when I planned our itinerary for our visit to Copenhagen and came across Kiin Kiin. The answer is that Kiin Kiin is the only Thai restaurant in the world outside Thailand with a Michelin star. With its exquisite dishes and unique flavors, dining there truly stands out, especially for someone who appreciates the culinary arts, like fans of asian franchise restaurants. Since we’re not planning a visit to Thailand any time soon, and since I’m a really big fan of Thai food, Kiin Kiin duly made its way to our itinerary.

From the Chef’s Table | Studio, Copenhagen

Om Nom Nomad - Studio

Studio is one of the three restaurants located at The Standard hotel, in the heart of Copenhagen, right by the harbor. The restaurant currently holds one Michelin star, which it earned only four months after opening in October 2013. Like most high end restaurant in Copenhagen, it has a connection to Noma. The head chef of Studio, Torsten Vildgaard, was a sous chef there and the head chef at its test kitchen for 8 years. Together with sous chef Bjarke von Holck, formerly of AOC, they strive to create a Nordic experience with influences from French and Japanese cuisines.

Spectacular Degustation Lunch | JAAN, Singapore

Om Nom Nomad - Jaan Degustation Lunch

Sometimes the timing works out just right. We’re really excited to share this post with you, since our lunch at JAAN under chef Kirk Westaway last month was one of our best ever, and only a few days ago have they received their first star in Singapore’s debut Michelin guide. If it were up to us, we would give them ten of those, and we’re about to tell you just why!

Avoiding the Lines at the Cheapest Michelin Star Restaurant | Tim Ho Wan, Hong Kong

Hong Kong is full of good restaurants, particularly chinese restaurants but among them there was one that is unanimously dubbed as a “must” – and that is Tim Ho Wan. “The cheapest Michelin star restaurant in the world” is actually part of a dim sum restaurant chain originating in Hong Kong, with three of its branches receiving the acclaimed star. It was opened in 2009 by chef Mak Pui Gor, formerly of the 3 Michelin starred restaurant Lung King Heen (where we also had a chance to dine in). Tim Ho Wan rapidly expanded and currently has branches in Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand and soon even New York.

Cause for Celebration | Atera, New York City

This March we had the opportunity to celebrate Tali’s birthday in Atera, a 2 Michelin starred restaurant based in New York’s Tribeca Neighborhood. Its founding chef, Matthew Lightner, who ran the kitchen for three years, was replaced last year by the Danish Ronny Emborg. This change made quite the ruckus online with mixed opinions on the decision to have a Danish chef as the head of a well-established American restaurant.
